    Martin took this shot early in the morning.

That was taken at 6:34 AM, about a minute before official sunrise. This happens because we are at 6,500 feet and the eastern plains that we are looking across are only about 4,000 feet. So, 1,500 feet above the plains we see sunrise quite a bit earlier. 

fire.airnow.gov now defaults to version 4 and you have to click on the gear at the top right to pull out the settings menu and go down the “NOAA Smoke Plums” slider and turn it on.


We’ve in level 1, but we are looking through a lot of smoke to the east, as you can see. Hence the intensely orange sun.
