Wednesday, July 22, 2026 Tuna Salad
We don’t do this very often because it involves a lot of prep work. We simply can’t find any store that carries a tuna salad the we actually like. They really can’t afford to use the amazing Ortiz Tuna in Oil (currently $19.99 for the 220 gram/7.7 oz jar at Whole Foods) which is the key to this salad. We start with the America’s Test Kitchen Simple Tuna Salad, modified for the slightly larger Ortiz jars. They call for 2 six ounce cans of tuna, so we’ve got about 15.5 ounces instead of 12 ounces:
2 7.7 ounce jars of Ortiz Tuna in oil
2.5 Tbsp lemon juice
5/8 tsp salt
3/8 tsp pepper
3 Tbsp minced celery
3 Tbsp minced red onion
3 Tbsp chopped dill pickles
1 Tbsp jarred garlic, its not as strong as fresh
3 Tbsp minced fresh italian parsley leaves - this huge quantity tells you this is not just a garnish
5 ounces Miracle Whip - this is a little brighter than manonnaise
3/8 tsp Dijon mustard - a heaping quarter teaspoon.
The first problem - how much italian parsley leaves are needed to produce 3 tablespoons of minced parsley? The conversion most commonly seen is 1 tablespoon of leaves produces a teaspoon of finely minced parsley. We know that’s not right, so Martin went with a good solid 1 cup of leaves.
This was shot at 9:32 AM.
The mise en place. At the bottom, the three measuring cups hold, from left to right, red onion, pickles, celery. You’ll see how the odd measuring cup just to the left of the Miracle Whip is used in the following movie.
The final step - mixing. There is the measuring cup, holding 5 ounces of Miracle Whip.
Done and ready for plastic wrap. By pushing it to take up half the bowl, portioning it into 3 lunches is easy. This was shot at 10:16 AM, so this takes about 45 minutes to make. At least the actual sandwich making takes almost no time.
Livingstone likes bread so much, that he barely even samples the tuna salad. So, this is only somewhat parrot approved…
