May 25, 2026 More Tweeks to the HVAC Thermostat

Its gotten warm enough to fiddle with the settings to get the last bit of cooling we can out of the system. After looking at the charts of the supply air temp, it was obvious that we didn’t need to let it go all the way up to 60 °F to end a freeze prevent cycle. 50 °F should be warm enough to melt any ice.

Martin wanted to collect enough data to make sure that this would work. The change was actually implemented yesterday.

At the left are 5/23/2026’s freeze prevent cycles. As you can see, there is so little ice forming that the temperature starts shooting up as soon as we turn the AC off. At the right are the new shorter cycles. The compressor is still running for about half an hour and turned off for at least 5 minutes, so we aren’t short-cycling the compressor. It used to be off for 20 minutes, so this should keep the house a lot cooler.

Here’s the change itself. Clear Evaporator Frozen has been changed to >= 50.00 °F
