Wednesday, October 7, 2026 Fire Mitigation Day 3

They’re now far enough north that the Giant finally has enough room to work a bit on the road.

A better look at the business end of the chipper. You can see how the feed rollers open and then close and pull the tree in.

This also shows one of the safety features nicely. You’ll notice that they always hook the carbiner onto a post on the chipper and use the winch to tighten up the rope. That’s because there is a safety switch on the right side of the winch (that green “frame” around the sides and top of the winch) that the rope has to push forward for the machine to operate. This guarantees that the winch rope won’t accidently be pulled into the chipper.

Another look, you can really see the safety switch and feed rollers.

This is how a drag and chip should go!

The Giant finally gets to help out a bit. These trees are way too heavy to do much with by hand!

The Giant handling a dead tree that had fallen down and was completely dry. These chip differently, producing a lot of fine wood dust.

Martin meant to say “Giant”, not “Bandit”!
