The Giant is a whole lot faster than the winch.
This one fell perfectly and rolled to where the Giant could do most of the work. If you look at the bottom right of the tree, you can see where the notch was cut out.
These guys can really thin the “hinge” down. The hinge on the trunk, is what’s left after the guide notch and back cut are done. In this case, it was so thin, that just a tap with the wedge was enough to finish the job.
This is the stump of the nearer tree at the left. Martin decided to count the rings. This was much more difficult than expected. A chain saw doesn’t produce a nice smooth surface, so it took a while. It looks like the tree was 92 years old. Click on it to download the full sized picture.
Getting started was interesting. Martin found this picture at Science Notes Tree Rings - Dendrochronology and Dendroclimatology. So, the whole splotch in the middle is the 1st year.
Martin had to keep shifting from one area to another as the chainsaw blurred some areas out. At the edge, the pine sap got smeared all over the most recent 5 or 6 rings.
