September 5, 2022 - The Library Overview
We finally got all the books unboxed (some 150 boxes or so) and shelved. All the science fiction paperbacks are properly organized by author and author’s universe. By that I mean that a whole lot of different authors wrote Conan books, so rather than doing a strict “by author” sort, we keep them together instead of scattering them all over the place.
The nonfiction is a mess. We never did have it in any kind of order the last time it was set up in our previous home, Desert Timbers, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. What we are going to do this time is use the Library of Congress classification. Some books have this information in them others don’t. We use the LOC’s Quick Search page to search by ISBN or Author; if that doesn’t work, Amazon will often find it.
In the worst case, such as the PowerPC 601 Users Manual, which doesn’t have an ISBN and isn’t in the Library of Congress., we take a guess at its classification using the Library of Congress Classification PDF files. So I found page 254 of Schedule T in them:
7889.A-Z Special computers. By name, A-Z
7889.A37 AIM 65
7889.A66 Apple II
7889.A663 Apple IIe
7889.A85 AT&T
7889.B3 BBC microcomputer
7889.B4 Besm
7889.C2 CDC 6600
7889.E5 ES 1020
7889.F44 FELIX C-256
7889.I26 IBM Personal Computer 7889.I5 Illiac
7889.M33 Macintosh
7889.M55 Minsk
7889.R4 REAC
7889.S4 Seac
7889.S7 Strela
7889.S8 Swac
7889.T77 TRS-80
7889.U6 Univac
7889.U7 Ural
7889.W47 Whirlwind 7889.Z54 Zilog Model Z-80
Now we can see that the PowerPC User Manual would be classified as TK.7889.P01.PowerPC. The 01 is a guess, I don’t really understand the cutters that well, I haven’t finished the online training.
Here’s an overall shot. There are 4 bays from left to right we just call them Bay 1, 2, 3 & 4. The fourth, a half-bay, is on the far right or east side of the library.
Here’s a look at bay 4.
This is the cookbook section of the library, its on the south wall of the office.
Still more of the library, we had to overflow this into the laundry room.
