January 15, 2023 or so. This took quite a few days.

Martin got these Wild Gears for Bill a few years back, but in the rental house, we never had room to check it out. It was time to unbox them and see what we had!

What are “Wild Gears”? They are to the old Spirograph what a Boeing 747 is to the Wright Flyer I! Let’s take a look.

Here’s an overview of our Wild Gears studio. At the top left, still covered in the protective paper is what’s called The Modular Gear set. The New Modular Gear Set is considerably different. On the magnetic whiteboard is the sheet of acrylic that the Plentiful Gear Set comes in. At the right is the Milwaukee Packet system’s Low-Profile Organizer. With this many rings and gears it takes a lot of organizer to do the job!

Here’s the organizer. At the front left are the less than 20 teeth section, with some of the very smallest gears in the white pillbox lying on its side. To the right of that is 20-29 teeth and all the rest of the compartments are labeled on the transparent top. In the 80-89 tooth section are two small sheets of gears, these are the Tiny Gears. At the back right are the small and large Mad or Strange Gears. These are weird shaped gears!

It took a lot of experimenting to find pens up to this tough job.

Here’s how Martin actually draws. This is why a magnetic whiteboard was needed. Those tiny little magnets are incredibly strong and 4 or 5 two magnet tall stacks hold everything nice and stable.
