This was a big day! We had decided that even after the HVAC compressor was cleaned, it still wasn’t really doing the job. It was running much of the time and could only keep the house from getting warmer. So, Morgan of St. Vrain Mechanical, our new HVAC guy, finally had some free time in the slow season and started work today. Final control work and initial tuning were done on the 18th.

We went from a 4 ton unit to a brand new model 5 ton unit with an almost unbelievable 17 SEER2 rating.

Both the inside and outside units had to be replaced. This is the new air handler and evaporator coil. It’s about 3” taller, so the St. Vrain guys had to do a lot of duct work and rework all the plumbing as well. There is freon gas and liquid and the water condensate drain.

On top of the unit with the green light is the little X-410 controller for all the Hood makeup air duct gear.

Here’s the outside unit. Amazingly, it’s only about 2/3 the height of the old 4 ton compressor. You can see the old unit on the Generac page, November 22, 2022.

And it worked!! As you can see from the above recording thermometer plot, with the house supply air temp in red and the room air temp in yellow, when this new system is cooling, it drives the house temperature right down! There is a truly impressive delta T of 30° F between  supply air and room temp!
